Multi-award-winning garden design studio.

Designing a garden is about far more than selecting plants or materials. It is about understanding how a property functions as a whole and how its outdoor spaces can enhance everyday life. At Andrew Christopher Garden Design, each project begins with a thoughtful design approach. We pride ourselves in curating imaginative solutions, and meticulous attention from the initial meeting to the finished landscape.
How to get started.
Most projects begin with a simple enquiry through the website or by email. After reviewing the details of the project, the studio will usually arrange a short introductory conversation by phone or Zoom.
This initial discussion allows us to understand the nature of the project, the property and the ambitions for the garden. If it appears that we are a good fit, the next step is to arrange an on-site consultation where the design process begins.
The Design Process
1 Initial Consultation
Every project begins with an on-site consultation with Andrew. This meeting provides an opportunity to explore your property, discuss how you would like to use your outdoor spaces, and begin shaping the vision for the project.
Practical considerations, site constraints and aspirations for the garden are discussed in depth. Following this meeting, a detailed design fee proposal is prepared outlining the scope of the design work.
The consultation is a professional service and is charged at a fixed fee, which is deducted from the design fee should the project proceed.
2 Site Survey
Before design work begins, a detailed topographical survey of the property is required. This survey provides accurate measurements of the site, buildings and levels.
Working with professional surveyors ensures that the design is developed on a precise digital model of your property.
3 Concept Development
Once the brief has been established and the site fully understood, the studio begins the process of developing the design concept for the property.
This stage explores how the garden and exterior spaces will function, how they will connect with the architecture of the house, and how our clients will interact with the space.
A wide range of considerations are explored during this stage, including spatial layout, movement, levels, materials, planting, lighting and the overall atmosphere of the garden. Practical needs and long-term usability are carefully balanced with aesthetic ideas and creative possibilities.
4 Concept Presentation
Once the design concept has been developed, it is presented through a comprehensive collection of highly detailed 3D visualisations. This presentation is usually delivered in person by Andrew at your home, allowing the design to be explored and discussed in a relaxed and personal setting.
This is often the most exciting stage of the process, as it is the first opportunity to see the proposed garden fully realised. Clients are able to see their own home placed within the new landscape, with views across the entire property brought to life in remarkable detail.
The design is presented as a carefully curated A3 book of visualisations that tell the story of the garden from entrance to far boundary. Each image reveals another aspect of the design, helping clients understand how the spaces will connect and how the garden will feel once complete.
At Andrew Christopher Garden Design, we place particular emphasis on this stage of the process. By producing a large number of highly detailed visualisations, the studio ensures that clients can fully understand the proposed design without needing any technical knowledge of design or planting. When a design is presented this clearly, clients quickly know whether it feels right for them.
5 Concept Animation
To complement the 3D visualisations, the studio also produces a fully edited digital animation of the proposed design. This cinematic walkthrough allows clients to experience their future garden in motion, revealing how the spaces connect and how the landscape will be experienced as you move through it.
The animation takes viewers on a journey around the property, from entrance to far boundary, showing the garden from a series of carefully composed viewpoints. It can also demonstrate how the landscape will feel at different times of the day, including the effect of lighting, atmosphere and changing light conditions.
Presented by Andrew in your home, this animation offers a remarkably immersive way to experience the design. It allows clients to see their property and the proposed garden brought to life with extraordinary clarity.
At Andrew Christopher Garden Design, this level of visualisation is a key part of the design process and helps ensure that every client can fully understand the concept before the project moves forward.
6 Technical Design & Detailed Drawings
Once the concept has been approved, the design moves into the technical design phase. During this stage the creative ideas developed earlier in the process are translated into a comprehensive set of detailed construction drawings that allow the project to be accurately priced and built.
Working in a similar way to an architectural practice, the studio prepares a carefully structured drawing package that defines every element of the project. These drawings provide the information required for contractors and specialist trades to construct the garden exactly as intended.
The drawing package typically includes a wide range of detailed plans and supporting documents, such as:
• site layout and setting-out drawings
• levels and drainage plans
• hard landscape layouts and surface specifications
• lighting and electrical layouts
• bespoke features and construction details
• boundary and structural elements
Planting design forms a particularly important part of this stage. The studio prepares a comprehensive planting plan that carefully positions every tree, shrub and perennial within the garden. To help clients fully understand the planting scheme, a dedicated A3 booklet is also prepared containing images and information for every plant included in the design.
In addition, clients receive a planting and maintenance guide that explains how the garden should be cared for and how it will develop over time.
The aim of this detailed documentation is to ensure that every aspect of the design can be delivered exactly as intended and to the high standards we demand. This allows the project to move smoothly from concept through to construction.
7 From Concept to Completion
Once the design documentation is complete, the project moves into the stage where the concept begins to take physical form. The studio works closely with a network of highly skilled landscape contractors and specialist suppliers to bring the design to life.
At this point the project is typically issued for tender so that accurate construction costs can be established. This stage is an important part of the process, as it allows the design to be carefully reviewed alongside the proposed build costs.
Where necessary, the studio can work with both the client and the contractor to refine aspects of the design, explore alternative materials or specifications, and adjust certain elements of the project in order to align the design with the investment level that feels comfortable for the client. In some cases, projects may also be delivered in carefully planned phases, allowing the garden to evolve over time while maintaining the integrity of the overall design.
Once construction begins, Andrew remains involved throughout the build process, working in collaboration with the contractor to ensure that the design is implemented as intended. Periodic site visits and ongoing communication with the build team help maintain quality and ensure that key design details are executed correctly.
The aim of this stage is to guide the project smoothly from concept through to completion, ensuring that the finished garden reflects the vision that was originally developed during the design process.
