When asked to design the outdoor spaces for this stunning 14,500 square foot waterfront property by Niamh Butler Architects, Andrew’s approach was to keep things simple and uncluttered thus showing off the lines of the architecture without competing with either the building or the views that surround it. This contemporary roof terrace garden in Skerries, North Dublin, designed to create a series of elevated outdoor living spaces overlooking the coastline. Developed in collaboration with the architecture of the house, the garden extends the living environment outdoors, combining strong structure with carefully layered planting and expansive views.
The design is arranged across a sequence of roof terraces and courtyards, each defined by clean architectural lines and a restrained material palette. Large olive trees set within tall planters introduce scale and permanence, while soft coastal planting responds to the exposed seaside conditions.
Outdoor living is central to the scheme, with bespoke seating, water features, and a fully integrated outdoor kitchen creating spaces for both quiet use and entertaining. A dedicated barbecue room further extends the usability of the garden, allowing it to function comfortably throughout the year.
Throughout the project, materials such as white granite, Kilkenny limestone, and western red cedar are used to create contrast and cohesion, reinforcing the connection between the architecture and the landscape.
Bespoke commissions for everything from the pearl white granite paving and cobble courtyard to the stunning David Harber ‘Dark Planet’ sculpture were all undertaken by Andrew Christopher garden designs to help play our part in this impressive property.
This project demonstrates how a roof terrace garden can become a fully realised extension of the home, offering privacy, structure, and refined outdoor living within a coastal setting.
